The Microplastic-Antibiotic Resistance Connection

چکیده

Abstract Microplastic pollution is a big and rapidly growing environmental problem. Although the direct effects of microplastic are increasingly studied, indirect hardly investigated, especially in context spreading disease antibiotic resistance genes, posing an apparent hazard for human health. particles provide hydrophobic surface that provides substrate attachment microorganisms readily supports formation microbial biofilms. Pathogenic bacteria such as fish pathogens Aeromonas spp., Vibrio opportunistic like Escherichia coli present these Moreover, some shown to be multidrug resistant. The presence microplastics known enhance horizontal gene transfer thus, may contribute dissemination resistance. Microplastics can also adsorb toxic chemicals antibiotics heavy metals, which select may, serve vectors transport genes aquatic environment. In this book chapter, we background information on biofouling (“plastisphere concept”), discuss relationship between resistance, identify knowledge gaps directions future research.

CONNECTION OF THE ClpXP PROTEASE TO AUTOLYTIC ACTIVITY AND ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE IN BACILLUS ANTHRACIS

The ClpXP protease functions as a global regulator of many bacterial proteins. It is comprised of ClpX, a regulatory ATPase that recognizes and unfolds proteins, and ClpP, which forms the proteolytic core. ClpX and/or ClpP have been linked to virulence in several pathogens including Bacillus anthracis. While ClpXP is important for survival within the host, it is unclear the mechanism by which i...

The Antibiotic Resistance Crisis

INTRODUCTION The rapid emergence of resistant bacteria is occurring worldwide, endangering the efficacy of antibiotics, which have transformed medicine and saved millions of lives.1–6 Many decades after the first patients were treated with antibiotics, bacterial infections have again become a threat.7 The antibiotic resistance crisis has been attributed to the overuse and misuse of these medica...

Antibiotic Resistance

Antibiotic resistance is an ongoing evolutionary process that has been the concern of infectious disease specialists since antibiotic use gained popularity. Antibiotic resistance is not a concern of the public as reflected by their desire for antibiotics whenever illness occurs. Patients can and do pressure their physicians for antibiotics ; 12 million antibiotic prescriptions were filled for u...

Antibiotic resistance: the perfect storm.

The worldwide epidemic of antibiotic resistance is in danger of ending the golden age of antibiotic therapy. Resistance impacts on all areas of medicine, and is making successful empirical therapy much more difficult to achieve. Antibiotic choices are often severely restricted, and the pipeline of new antibiotics is almost dry. Resistance cannot be prevented, but its development and spread can ...
